If you consider variety the spice of life, you may be interested in hitting up some strange and exotic food festivals.
Extreme eaters can start in Calgary, where Bottlescrew Bill’s Pub plays host to the 20th annual Testicle Festival, starting this week.
Chefs prepare prairie oysters, also known as bull’s testicles, for hungry patrons.
Apparently, when sliced and fried, the taste compares to bologna.
If prairie oysters aren’t exciting enough, here’s four more food festivals to challenge your taste buds.
1. Roadkill Cook-off
If you have ever wondered what porcupine or possum tastes like, head to Marlinton, W. Va., for their annual Roadkill Cook-off in September.
Last year’s winning creation was something called ‘Stuffed Bear-Ron-A-Soar-Us’, which may or may not contain bear meat.
2. Fellsmere Frog Leg Festival
If you didn’t get your fill of frogs in West Virginia, you can always head to Florida for the Fellsmere Frog Leg Festival.
Started as a fundraiser for school recreation equipment, volunteers now serve up more than 7,000 frog leg and gator tail dinners each year.
3. Waikiki Spam Jam
With Hawaii consuming more Spam than any other U.S. state, it is no surprise that Honolulu has their own festival dedicated to the canned meat.
The Waikiki Spam Jam is an street festival where the city’s finest chefs serve up their Spam-filled creations.
4. Carnaval de Vilanova i la Geltrú
Want to indulge your sweet tooth? Be sure to be in Vilanova i la Geltru, Spain during their Mardi Gras-style candy fight.
First comes the La Merengada (Meringue War), where children take to the streets for a sticky food fight with meringue desserts. When all the meringue is gone, the Candy Fight begins, with thousands of pieces of candy being thrown onto the streets.
